According to wikiepedia: Canadian science is believed to have started with Jesuits who came to New France (a region which would become the Canadian Province of Quebec, eventually). During the 1800s Jesuit involvement in science was replaced by many local learned societies, dedicated to conducting science. Well, Science in Canada is way beyond that - but it is a good start.
